The Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) is a coast‑to‑coast walking route stretching roughly 215 miles (346 km) from Southport on the Irish Sea to Hornsea on the North Sea. It offers walkers a uniquely varied journey across Northern England, combining peaceful countryside, historic towns, riverbank paths, and the dramatic Pennine landscape.

The trail is mostly traffic‑free, well‑signed, and surprisingly level, thanks to its use of former railway lines, canal towpaths, and gently graded valley routes. This makes it ideal for walkers seeking long‑distance adventure without steep climbs, as well as those who prefer shorter, more relaxed day sections. Many parts are suitable for families, beginners, and leisure walkers looking for comfortable, scenic routes.

Walking the TPT takes you through green corridors between towns and cities, riverside and canal paths offering peaceful stretches of nature, Pennine valleys and the Longdendale Trail, providing gentle climbs with rewarding views, wildlife‑rich countryside across East Yorkshire, historic      northern towns including Liverpool, Manchester, Doncaster, and Selby.

The trail also forms part of the European long‑distance walking route E8, giving it an international walking pedigree.
